Becoming One with Nature

Fun Fact: The Gainesville area has so many outdoor activities to enjoy. Whether you don't have class or you have a free weekend, there are a ton of opportunities to immerse yourself in the outdoors. Here's a list of my top 5 suggestions:

1) Paynes Prairie

Paynes Prairie is a National Natural Landmark located just south of Gainesville in Micanopy, FL. It encompasses approximately 21,000 acres of land, 300 plus species of birds, and wide variety of wildlife such as alligators, bison, and horses. There are various look out points throughout the park, along with various hiking trails and camping sites. For more information, check out their website.

2) Devil's Den

Devil's Den is one of the Gainesville area's hidden gems. Located 35 minutes from campus in Williston, FL, Devil's Den is an underwater cave where you have the option of scuba diving or snorkeling. See what all the hype is about with this article by Travel and Leisure magazine.

3) The Springs: Blue, Ginnie, Rainbow, etc.

In addition to Devil's Den, there are other local opportunities to scuba dive and snorkel in the Gainesville area. North Central Florida acquires an abundance of fresh water springs. At the springs, you can go swimming, diving, kayaking, and tube drifting. Most springs are only 30-45 minutes away from UF's campus. Check out the Boomerang above with me doing a backflip at Blue Springs!

4) Lake Wauberg

Lake Wauberg is a UF delicacy. Funded by the University of Florida Student Government, Lake Wauberg is free for all UF students. This is a great location for retreats, barbecues, and weekend outings. In addition, at Lake Wauberg you can go swimming, diving, kayaking, waterskiing, and so much more. Even if you have a long break between classes, Lake Wauberg is a fun and relaxing option to soak in the sun and splash around. Check out this website for more information.

5) Devil's Millhopper

To be completely honest, I don't know much about Devil's Millhopper. I hear its pretty cool but it is basically a giant pit here in Gainesville. There's a waterfall and luscious greens everywhere. Check out this website for more information. I hear great things!
